Who are they

Currys plc is a British multinational retailer specialising in electrical and telecommunications products and services, with its headquarters in London. It was established in 2014 through the merger of Dixons Retail and Carphone Warehouse Group. As a leading omni-channel retailer of technology products and services, Currys operates online and through 727 stores across six countries.

Additionally, they boast the largest central repair hub for electrical products in Europe.

The challenge

To make learning more exciting and engaging for colleagues, beyond the usual "it's your job, so you have to complete the training," which often focuses on compliance-based topics, the Currys L&D team collaborated with us at Academy Point to brainstorm innovative possibilities.

The solution

The solution involved creating a new Challenges feature from the ground up within the Academy Point LMS that would benefit everyone in the Currys group.

Following a brainstorming session, we gathered all the agreed requirements and began designing 'wireframe' layouts for the workflow of this new feature. We collaborated with the Currys team to gather feedback and approval throughout the development process.

A key requirement was the option for the Administrator to either select specific content to be completed or to finish a designated number of modules based on content types, such as 50 videos.

We developed an administrator interface that allows challenges to be organised like a scheduled campaign. The Currys administrator can define the challenge's objectives:

  • What needs to be completed
  • Determine who can participate
  • Specify the rewards
  • Set the duration (days, weeks, months, or indefinitely).

For colleagues, a new Challenges interface was introduced, enabling them to view the latest challenges assigned to them and see the rewards they could earn for completing them, such as points, badges, certificates, prize draw entries, or simply the recognition of finishing before their peers.

The result

With the introduction of the new Challenges feature in the Currys version of the Academy Point LMS, colleagues enthusiastically embraced this exciting "earn while you learn" approach. It helped them feel more connected and engaged with the LMS, as they could complete challenges by consuming additional learning content while advancing their personal development.

Challenges were also created for manufacturer-based content to promote their latest products. Through this feature, manufacturers could offer points and entries into prize draws, giving participants the chance to win the featured product.
